Top 6 Tips on using Bluetooth Enabled Printers

by James Kara Murat

Tips on printing using Bluetooth

Using a Bluetooth adapter can convert any printer into a Bluetooth enabled one. However while using any Bluetooth enabled printers, it is important to know a few basics. In this section we elaborate on these.

1. Limited range: With Bluetooth enabled printers, youll find that range is an issue. The range of distance within which printing is possible is from about 30 to 330 feet. This of course would depend on the hardware configuration. The higher the range the more the power needed, which could drain out your battery in the long run. 2. Printing from the mobile: There are times when you just have to print that gorgeous picture or that document from your hand-held PDA to a Bluetooth enabled printer. In such cases, what you need to do is: search for your Bluetooth enabled printer on your mobile phone. You might find it in the option called BT (Bluetooth) Discovery. On clicking this, it will show all the available Bluetooth devices. Then you can select the printer and hit on 'Print'. However be careful, as the Discovery stage makes your phone or handheld device accessible to anyone and everyone within your vicinity. Therefore it can be susceptible to hacking. Be sure to switch off the Bluetooth mode once youre done printing.

3. USB ports: Some printers have what is called the Pictbridge USB port which is compatible with any bluetooth adapter. This makes printing from any Bluetooth device easier. Pictbridge is a hardware interface technology that enables your printer to access and print images and files from your mobile or PDA. To perform Pictbridge printing you need to:

a. Connect the USB device

b. Wait till both the devices recognize each other

c. Select from the menu that appears, the set of images or files you want printed

d. The menu also offers options to change the size, layout and resolution of the images

e. Select Print

4. Hacking: Make sure you avoid setting your Bluetooth enabled device to a discoverable mode. This makes it possible for your IP address to be known by any person with malicious intent. Often such attacks are directed at mobile phones, PDAs and computers. Hackers usually connect to your PDA or mobile by using fictitious names that are familiar to you. Therefore if you connect even once to their device, chances are, the hackers can keep connecting to your device and use it for malicious purposes - like sending a virus, crashing your operating system or even deleting important files.

5. Enable encryption: For security reasons, its best to always enable encryption for any Bluetooth transfer that you may make. In order to enable encryption in any Bluetooth enabled device, you need to use the Bluetooth connection Wizard (usually present on Windows XP operating systems).

6. Keep firmware updated: It is also essential to ensure speed and agility in your mobile phone while printing through your wireless printers. To do this, ensure your mobile phones firmware is always kept updated.

Key Learning Points Of Bluetooth

By Debra Goh

Bluetooth is easily the best in wireless handheld technology. When it comes to learning, Bluetooth can get quite complicated. To help you, youll find the key learning points of Bluetooth below:

1. Bluetooth is an energy efficient, low overhead communication protocol thats ideal for interdevice communications.

2. Unlike infrared, Bluetooth doesnt require a line of sight.

3. Depending on the implementation, Bluetooth can have a range of up to 100 meters.

4. The specification of Bluetooth consists of a Foundation Profile Document and a Foundation Core Document.

5. The protocol stack for Bluetooth consists of core protocols, cable protocols, and even adapted protocols.

6. The transmitter operates around the 2.4 GHz frequency band.

7. The data channel will change frequency, or hops, 1,600 times in a second, between the 79 allocated channels in the ISM band.

8. Bluetooth utilizes a spread spectrum frequency hopping RF characteristic to ensure that independant networking operates when the other devices are in range.

9. A piconet is formed when one or more devices open up a channel of communication.

10. A piconet can have a master and up to seven slaves.

11. Communication of the interdevice is based on the concepts of channels.

12. All Bluetooth devices are capable of transmitting voice.

13. The channel has a total capacity of 1 MB per second.

14. There are two types of channels with Bluetooth - SCO (Synchronous Connection Oriented) and ACL (Asynchronous Connectionless).

15. The SCO channels are time oriented, and are therefore primarily used for transferring time critical data such as voice.

16. ACL channels are normally used for communicating data.

17. Data contained in a packet can be up to 2,745 bits in length.

18. In a single piconet, there can be up to three SCO links containing 64,000 bits a second each.

19. To avoid collision and timing problems, SCO links are reserved slots that are set up by the master.

20. The masters can support up to three SCO links with either one, two, or three slaves.

21. The slots that arent reserved for SCO links can be used as ACL links.

22. The LMP (Link Management Protocol) will handle link level security, error corrections, and the establishment of communications links.

23. The LMP packets will have priority over user packets that originate and form the L2CAP layer.

24. The L2CAP layer will ensure an acceptable quality of service.

25. No more than one ACL link can exist at the L2CAP layer.
